CAN I FIND A VALENTINE’S DATE WITHOUT DRESSING UP?

by Eldad K. Muthanga

Valentines day, the one day of the year where all lovers and hopeless romantics look forward to. This is the day where people dress to impress and come up with creative ideas to sweep their lovers off their feet.

Why do people dress up for Valentines? To create a good first impression maybe? Or is it to feel confident in themselves?

Well, here at U.S.I.U the Valentines committee, Aisha Mussa and Michelle Kimani, took it upon themselves to try and reduce that pressure. They organized an event called Valentine blind speed dating on Thursday 13th February at the Cafeteria Terrace in order to help single people who were scared of not meeting the dressing expectations to have an easy time finding a date.

The event was a complete success as people were confident sharing with their dates. This comes to show you how something as simple as dressing plays a big role in perception. Dressing is a form of nonverbal communication and it easy for people to misunderstand/judge a person according to how they dress which corresponds with their interest towards that person.

They say love is blind, that mean lovers are blind. Not literally of course. This statement means that once you find love you become vulnerable to your partner. This makes you blind to their flaws and concentrate more on the good which the event brought out. It showed us that looking for personality and character is more important than external factors i.e. clothing and looks.
